Mid-Atlantic Operations Update

Dulles, Virginia

Our Mid-Atlantic team is having a very busy 2015 with exciting new projects, including—our largest job to date in the area—the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority (MWAA) Rail Yard and Maintenance Facility, located in Dulles, Virginia. The facility is being built on a piece of MWAA property, at the end of one of the runways at Dulles International Airport; it will be used by Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authorities as a maintenance facility for their commuter trains. Our scope includes performing approximately 500,000 CY of earthwork, along with the installation of all the storm and sanitary sewers and waterlines. We will also be blasting the rock that is found beneath the ground, which will be crushed by our recycling division and used for aggregates on-site. This is a two year project—scheduled for completion in October of 2018—that is being overseen by Hensel Phelps Construction Company.

Jobs that were completed or are in the process of finishing up this year include two at Fort Meade, Sentara Medical Center, 400 6th Street Office Building, V-Street Apartment Building, Cheltenham Youth Detention Center, CSX Railroad Winchester Western Bridge Raise, CSX Germantown Bridge Demolition, CSX Point of Rocks and Catoctin Tunnel Lowering and St. Charles Energy Power Plant. A brief status updates on several of these projects are as follows:

Cheltenham Youth Detention Center was awarded to Independence Excavating (IX) in January 2014 by Turner Construction Company. It is a 16 site-work package including athletic fields and site utilities. The majority of the work was completed in 2014. Crews are in the process of installing miscellaneous drainage, bio-retention structures and ponds, finish grading and re-spreading of topsoil. The project will be completed this fall.

The CSX Point of Rocks & Catoctin Tunnel Lowering is the third CSX National Gateway Improvement Project we were contracted to perform by Clark Construction. Multiple crews have been working around the clock each weekend since the project re-started in mid-May this year. The Point of Rocks Tunnel is completed and the Catoctin Tunnel Lowering will be completed by the end of August.

St. Charles Energy Power Plant – The majority of our contract work was completed in June and IX has been retained by SNC Lavalin (SNC) to perform a significant amount of additional work needed for the site preparation and utilities.SNC has been very satisfied with IX’s performance and the level of professionalism exhibited by our crews. As a result, we are in the process of bidding a large project at the Keys power plant in Brandywine, Maryland at the invitation of SNC.

V Street Residential – IX is awaiting the final call back from Buzzuto Contractors to come in and complete the storm and sanitary lateral tie-ins, along with the final grading around the building—which is now out of the ground. We expect to see this project’s completion before the year’s end.

As you can see, IX Mid-Atlantic has taken great strides this year toward establishing a presence in the region and gaining the confidence of owners and contractors—through our attention to safety, quality and timley completion.
