Disney Springs in Orlando, Florida is an outdoor shopping, entertainment and dining destination packed with vacationers. Disney is always looking for ways to keep the overall experience current and full of life. With a new “NBA Experience” planned to start construction in early 2018, adjacent to Cirque du Soleil, House of Blues and Splitsville, Independence Excavating’s (IX) demolition team was brought in to safely demolish and remove the existing DisneyQuest structure.
In addition to the overriding safety concerns, both for the work crews and public, this high-profile project had a huge emphasis on minimizing any disturbances and impacts to the huge volume of pedestrians using the surrounding areas that remained active. Originally planned for floor-by-floor demolition with surrounding scaffolding, IX was able to successfully propose and complete the work primarily utilizing a Cat 385 high reach excavator once the interior of the building was completely gutted to minimize landfill impacts, which enabled the project to be performed more safely and accelerated the schedule. This enabled Disney to avoid disturbances during the 2017 holiday season and put them ahead of schedule on the new construction phase of the work.
Once the entire structure was removed, processed and loaded out, IX followed up with full depth foundation removal and rough grading to present a clean site for new construction. We are extremely proud to have completed this challenging project with the highest of standards and with a perfect safety record, working over approximately 10,000 man hours.
