Northeast Ohio Southerly Regional Sewer District Landfill Remediation
The Northeast Ohio Southerly Regional Sewer District (NEORSD), the largest sewage treatment plant in Ohio, treats sewage and discharges the byproduct to three large lagoons. NEORSD contracted Independence Excavating over a number of years to dewater and clean the lagoons, and then place the dewatered ash into a landfill.
Independence Excavating installed sediment and erosion controls, loaded and hauled the ash onto the landfill, and graded according to design grades for proper site closure. Then in 2006, Independence Excavating successfully closed the 15-acre site. They hauled in over 120,000 container yards of clay coversoil and topsoil. A geocomposite drainage layer, division berm and storm-water drainage features were installed. Independence Excavating added a clay southern berm to protect the landfill from a nearby tributary.
The Results
A NEORSD engineer, outside engineers and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency all supervised Independence Excavating on the job. Independence Excavating finished the project on time and under budget.
