Construction Engineer (PE)-CLE

Independence Excavating is a recognized industry leader in challenging site development, heavy industrial applications, demolition, environmental solutions, concrete construction, aggregate crushing, and is one of the Midwest’s premier and diversified construction companies seeks to fill the position of Construction Engineer. This position will be responsible for professional engineering support of our operations with regard to trenching, earth retainage, foundations, and structural analysis during demolition planning.  This position works heavily with the estimating and project management group in planning the work and contributing the engineering analysis and input to safely and effectively execute our work.  The product of this position is the successful planning of the work, to be executed in the field, as well as sealed plans, submittals and project documents which will become part of project and safety record.

Specific Responsibilities Include:                                                

  • Fully comprehend and work with engineering and constructability concepts related to Civil, Structural, and Geotechnical projects.
  • Understand the Estimating position, what goes into an estimate and how projects are bid to work with estimators in transitioning and setting up jobs, as well as cross-training and bidding jobs when required.
  • Work with Safety and field managers to prepare site safety, security, and maintenance of traffic and storm water pollution plans.
  • Work with Field Managers to establish, track and manage project planning and execution.
  • Review sub-contractor and supplier quote comparisons with the estimators in order to finalize scopes and pricing to generate purchase orders and Sub-contracts
  • Identify and discuss high-risk or critical sub-contractor and suppliers.  Work with Senior Management and field management to adequately manage them. 
  • Prepare, review and return submittals for items to be manufactured or provided.
  • Coordinate construction activities with local officials (engineering, service dept, fire, police, zoning, etc.) to keep IX in good standing with the local government and residents.
  • Work with Superintendent/Operation’s Manager to determine equipment & crew needs.
  • Make sure that Field Managers, subcontractors and suppliers receive amended drawings/Bulletins/RFI Answers/other contract or scope changes.
  • Write and coordinate any RFIs or clarifications with the Owner or Designer and maintain the documentation of those answers.
  • Resolve conflicts or disputes between owners, engineers and contractors.
  • Maintain historical job cost for use when estimating.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge / Skills / Requirements include

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering (Civil, Structural, Geotechnical or related)
  • Preferred Professional Engineering License or Completed Fundamentals of Engineering requirements with a track to complete the Professional Engineering Licensure.
  • Must have strong organizational skills in order to handle the variety of tasks assigned.
  • Must develop positive working relationships with owners and project engineers as well as local government offices.
  • At least 5 years experience working primarily in the management of large commercial construction projects, engineering design or evaluation in the construction field.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budget, schedule, people, and quality of work at multiple construction sites    
  • Must be competent to performing complete and accurate project take offs and estimates
  • Strong project computer systems experience required
  • Must be able to effectively communicate verbally with employees, external vendors, owners and general contractors.
  • Must be able to discuss job plans effectively with local enforcement agencies.
  • Must communicate bigger issues to IX upper management in a timely manner.
  • Must be able to prepare letters that present a concise and logical point of view.
