Blue Ridge Substation

Selected to perform the complete civil scope for the Blue Ridge Substation and associated switchyard, Independence Excavating delivered comprehensive site development services in support of the larger primary project. Although not originally awarded the substation civil package, Independence Excavating secured the work based on proven performance during the primary project and a strong recommendation from the Owner, reinforcing our reputation for execution, reliability, and production capability.

The project required full site preparation and earthwork operations, including approximately 10,700 cubic yards of topsoil stripping and nearly 33,000 cubic yards of cut to fill operations within the substation and switchyard footprint. Additional excavation included over 10,600 cubic yards for stormwater pond construction, along with subgrade preparation and fine grading across more than 13,000 square yards to meet strict elevation and compaction requirements necessary for electrical infrastructure.

Stormwater infrastructure installation was a key component of the civil scope. Independence Excavating installed approximately 1,000 linear feet of 15 inch HDPE storm sewer, nearly 5,000 linear feet of reinforced concrete pipe outfall with cutoff structures, and extensive conduit crossings totaling nearly 16,000 linear feet. Riser and skimmer systems were also installed to support permanent stormwater management requirements.

To support heavy electrical equipment and long term facility performance, significant aggregate placement was required. The project included placement of over 36,000 tons of #1 limestone, 16,800 tons of #3 limestone, 38,500 tons of #304 limestone, and nearly 29,000 tons of #57 stone. Heavy-duty access roads and stone pads were constructed to accommodate crane operations, equipment staging, and permanent substation foundations.

Throughout construction, Independence Excavating self performed the civil scope utilizing in house equipment, field supervision, and safety personnel. Earning the substation and switchyard package based on performance on the primary project demonstrates the confidence Owners place in our team and our ability to integrate seamlessly into complex, multi-contractor environments.

The successful delivery of the Blue Ridge Substation civil scope further solidifies Independence Excavating’s ability to execute infrastructure projects safely, efficiently, and in alignment with aggressive construction schedules.
