Mercer Generating Station Decommissioning & Demolition

Independence Excavating (IX) was contracted by Hilco Redevelopment Partners (HRP) to complete the full environmental decommissioning and demolition of the former coal-fired power plant Mercer Generating Station in New Jersey located on a 132-acre site.

The former coal-fired power plant formerly owned by PSE&G, was one of the largest plants we have been involved with in terms of both scrap tonnage and former electrical mega-watt (MW) output. The Mercer Power Station was located outside of Trenton in Hamilton Twp., New Jersey. Our scope of work included utility disconnects, permitting, equipment salvage, asbestos abatement, universal and regulated waste removal, all structural demolition including multiple explosive felling events, scrap processing and sale, concrete and asphalt removal, concrete crushing, and select site restoration including working with the environmental consultant /Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP) to help coordinate and perform excavation, lay-back, make safe, stockpile, load-out, and backfill of impacted areas to support HRP’s development efforts.

Partnering with the local unions to perform 100% of this project and maximize local union participation has been a big focus for both IX and HRP as well as coordination with HRP’s ongoing site environmental remediation efforts.
