Weirton Steel Demolition

Weirton Steel has operated since 1909 as an integrated steel mill producing carbon steel from raw materials. Mittal Steel took over plant operations of all the Weirton Steel facilities in 2005. When Mittal decided to idle all blast furnaces, ore yards and the double strands caster, they turned to Independence Excavating for assistance.

Making Room To Grow

Since 2004, Independence Demolition—Independence Excavating’s sister company for demolition services—has worked with the plant engineering, plant environmental and purchasing departments to remove and/or salvage the idled and abandoned facilities. Razed facilities include the Sinter Plant Complex, Mainland Coke Plant, HCL Pickle Tanks, portions of the Open Hearth Structure, the Air Products Plant and numerous Storage Tanks Facilities. These efforts have resulted in more land area for operations, reduction in overall taxes and positive cash for recyclable scraps. Independence Demolition has recycled numerous spare parts, railroad cars, slag pots and miscellaneous scrap to optimize the benefits of in-house scrap steel recycling.

With the assistance of Independence Excavating and Precision Environmental, the Independence Demolition team performed all utility relocations and regulated material abatement to provide turnkey service.

The Results

Throughout the project, Independence successfully juggled multiple scopes of work and eliminated conflicts in scheduling and priorities. Independence Excavating continues to work with Mittal Steel at their Weirton facility in West Virginia.
